Senior Extension Associate
As Director of Education at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Nancy Trautmann leads a team that aims to inspire curiosity, learning, and action related to birds and the natural world.
My research focuses on how to transform the way people learn, empowering educators to go beyond lectures and textbooks to engage students in conducting investigations, participating in citizen science, and learning through inquiry. This translates into research on teacher professional development, student learning outcomes, and potential roles of technology in supporting interactive and in-depth learning.
Outreach and Extension Focus
The Education Program at the Lab of Ornithology is devoted to connecting students and the public with citizen science, conservation, and research related to birds and biodiversity. We create resources and opportunities for people of all ages, in school and out, in person and online, in Ithaca and throughout the world. Drawing on the Lab’s vast array of video, sounds, and citizen science data, we aim to spark curiosity, build scientific skills, and inspire conservation action.
